FOCUS – Follow One Course Until Success

March 8, 2011 1 comment

There comes a time in one’s life when one has to make a choice in regards to career, life choices and so much more. All too often we wander aimlessly or flit from one project to another.

Recently I met someone who asked me if I knew what FOCUS meant. This got me thinking. We all like to think we are ‘focused’ and that we know what we want. But do we really? Do our attention spans last the course? Do we stay focused until we have actually reached out to achieve what we want or are we too easily distracted?

On reflection, I can honestly say that I had lost focus, I knew I wanted get somewhere and do something significant with my life. How easy it is to get into a comfort zone and then lack the confidence to take that leap into the unknown and pursue ones goals.

I was given a 1957 Australian Penny by this person and it serves as a reminder to me on a daily basis to FOCUS and so I have set myself some goals, small achievable ones to begin with, but each one will bring me closer to what I want to achieve.

T.S. Elliot says “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”

Put an end to procrastination, and move forward. Set those goals and set out to achieve what it is you wish for yourself. So, if you are passionate about something get out there, FOCUS and be successful!!

The ability to focus attention on important things is a defining characteristic of intelligence.” Robert J. Shiller

How the love of latte has led me into the world of social media (@luvmylatte)

September 16, 2010 1 comment

As a self confessed coffee addict and lover of latte I have found myself being drawn in to the world of social media.

I found myself thinking a little while ago about how I could go about sharing my passion for coffee with others.

As a result, I created a Facebook page “Luv My Latte” (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Luv-My-Latte/) and have acquired www.luvmylatte.com which I am hoping to have up and running soon.   My intentions are to share reviews of the many cafes I visit, interesting coffee facts and titbits and much more.

From humble beginnings and basic knowledge I am slowly working my way through the plethora of information out there in researching all there is to know about coffee as well as learning about web design.

I have chosen WordPress as my blogging tool and am in awe of just how much there is to learn.  This has led me to many hours of viewing tutorials, the purchase of a “Beginners guide to …WordPress” as well as speaking with many blogging and website experts.

I have learnt that the interface in WordPress is easy to manage.  One can create a post and publish with just a few clicks.  The look is easily customised and there are lots of free themes as well as lots to purchase too depending on your requirements.

There have been many occasions however, where I have felt like tearing my hair out in frustration… Solution… have a latte, deep breathe and keep on blogging  🙂

@luvmylatte:: What does social media mean to me?

A café Latte.

I was asked recently what social media means to me and I thought it would be a good opportunity to share my thoughts with you. At the time I said “sharing my latte”.
But as I sit here thinking of something interesting to write about and what I am going to say that will be interesting to those who are going to read it, I wonder how many people are actually going to read it and will I be able to come up with something unique or entertaining to keep them amused?
To me social media is all about interacting with people, communicating with those you might not ordinarily meet and sharing good times like my love of lattes.  Social media gives me a voice to share my thoughts and share ideas and interesting links. The ultimate and most meaningful to me is sharing a really good conversation over an exceptional latte.
So where do I turn to for inspiration.
1.     Music.  Somehow there is always a song lyric that seems to inspire me
2.    Talking with friends and  colleagues … over a latte of course!
3.    Watching something funny on the television
4.    I keep a journal which has become my best friend and goes everywhere with me.  Including sleeping next to my bed should an idea pop into my head at some random time of the night when I am having trouble staying asleep.
5.    Surfing the social networks and reading other blogs for inspiration.

What does social media mean to you?  I would love to hear your thoughts.

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, and I’m feeling good… @luvmylatte

So, what does blogging and Social [Media] Butterflies mean to me?

Initially when I began blogging, it was mainly to “vent”. Over time though it became more interesting in what I could share with and learn from others.

There is such a plethora of information out there that it is virtually impossible to find the time to sift through it all and so I have found that I have learnt a lot by following others and sharing what I have learnt with them. They say that social media is about the conversation and interaction – well for me it certainly is.

The internet can be a scary place when you are a beginner and so I took on the “caring and sharing” philosophy.

I can’t say that there is any one particular area that I am focused on as there is just so much to learn. However, I do like to focus on positives; be it a positive quote, an inspirational thought, feel good song or a helpful and interesting website. Reading others blogs with comments shared and laughing with friends over photos posted all help make my day better.

When I draft my blogs these days, whilst some of them continue to be my view and perspective of an issue I also share information, quotes and fun stories that I find. The feedback that I receive from my blog has been positive and whilst it isn’t always on the blog itself but through emails and facebook or twitter comments, I do feel that I am heard in a caring way.

I would like to share a favourite song of mine.  So sit back and enjoy a latte or a nice glass of red wine and enjoy 😀

Till next time … watch this space

Feeling Good ~ Nina Simone

Birds flyin’ high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by you know how I feel
Its a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me
yeah, it’s a new dawn it’s a new day it’s a new life for me ooooooooh
AND I’M FEELING GOOD

Fish in the sea, you know how I feel
River runnin’ free you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree you know how I feel
Its a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me
And I’m feelin good

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean don’t you know
Butterflies all havin’ fun you know what I mean
Sleepin’ peace when day is done that’s what I mean
And this old world is a new world and a bold world for me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the crime you know how I feel
Your freedom is mine, and I know how I feel

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me
OH I’M FEELING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

we start the collective…

Social [Media] Butterflies has been created as a professional, non-competitive collective. its founder, Charlie Helen of Charlie Design, firmly believes that customers and clients align with particular personalities in social media and therefore each “butterfly” will have a role, place, skill and focus to share. Butterflies who will contribute don’t all have a business in social media though…  however each has a unique voice, passion and strength. Social [Media] Butterflies are from fields such as “life commentators”, youth, brand, employee, music, business, and news.

At the time of writing there are no professional groups for social media “professionals” in Adelaide. Some international groups have formed though and we do have the #socadl presence (#socadl is for anyone interested in social media). That said, many groups form and then fail due to competitiveness, lack of leadership and/or purpose. Im hoping all #adelaide ones thrive and prosper!!

The Social [Media] Butterflies collective will be used to showcase talent, provide a networking stream, commentary and avenue for professionals to hone their craft. The philosophy remains : to help people. experiment. have fun. demonstrate. raise awareness.
